This quotation rightly expresses what girls actually feel about diamonds. Diamonds are precious stones that have their own significance. Every girl in this world wishes to own it. A piece of diamond jewelry holds a special place in her life whether it is gifted by someone or bought on her own. That’s why, this special piece requires special care and attention to retain its beauty and shine. A clean diamond looks beautiful and vibrant as compared to a dirty one. These precious stones attract grease and dirt like magnets. Dirt can either form a film on their surface or settle below the setting in the jewelry. In both the cases, luster and brilliance of the diamond gets highly reduced. It is therefore necessary to clean your jewelry regularly.
Cleaners for Diamond Jewelry
Buy a quality glass cleaner that can be used to clean diamonds as well as other jewelry pieces. Spray a small amount of glass cleaner on the jewelry and scrub away the settled dirt on the surface using your finger. Use a soft bristle toothbrush to remove the debris settled beneath the groves and settings in the jewelry. Lotions, creams, and other items tend to settle beneath the stones which must be removed to regain its lost luster. After scrubbing, wash the jewelry with warm water and dry it using a soft lint-free cloth.
Use a mild dishwashing liquid to clean your diamond jewelry. Pour a few drops of the liquid in a bowl containing warm water and place the jewelry in it. After sometime, pick the jewelry piece and clean the debris using a soft toothbrush. Like the previous method, wash away the liquid soap with warm water and wipe it off using a microfiber cloth.
Lestoil is a very popular cleaning agent used for household cleaning. You can clean your diamond jewelry in the same way using lestoil, as mentioned for dishwashing liquid.
Ammonia can also be used for cleaning diamond jewelry. All you have got to do is, take one part water and one part ammonia and mix them together. Soak the jewelry in the ammonia-water mix for not more than 15 seconds. Take the jewelry out and clean the debris entrapped within the jewelry settings. Once done, rinse with water and dry using a clean non-abrasive cloth.
It is a popular cleansing solution easily available in supermarkets. Mix eight parts warm water with one part Mr. Clean in a bowl. Place the diamond jewelry in the solution for 15 minutes. Take out the jewelry and brush off the grease and debris accumulated on the diamond and in the jewelry. Rinse it using hot water and leave it aside to dry.
Useful Tips for Diamond Jewelry
- Do not use strong cleaners as they can adversely affect the luster of the diamond.
- Keep your diamonds away from strong chemicals like hair sprays, etc., as their chemical composition might prove harmful for the precious stone.
- Do not wear your diamond jewelry when doing rough work like washing utensils, house cleaning, etc.
- Avoid contact of diamonds with chlorine as it can damage the shine and mounting of these precious stones.
- Use a jewelry case to store your diamond jewelry. Wrap individual jewelry pieces in separate zip lock packets or tissue paper, to prevent jumbling of the jewelry pieces together.
- In case of a disturbed mounting, go to the jeweler and get the setting rectified. Loose fitted diamonds tend to fall off and I am sure, you cannot afford to lose your precious diamonds.
If you follow the methods stated above to clean your jewelry, you will not have any problem in maintaining their beauty. Diamonds are rare and precious. Not every woman in this world is lucky enough to own a diamond jewelry. So if you are among the lucky few, make sure you appreciate the fact and do your best to take care of it, so that it can add to your beauty today and can be passed on to the future generations of your family as diamonds last forever!
What is a diamond? A gem stone? A symbol of eternity? A declaration of undying love? I think the best way to describe diamonds, immortalized by the gorgeous Marilyn Monroe, is “Diamonds are a woman’s best friend.” Every woman will agree that truer words were never spoken. Every woman treasures a diamond. Believe it when it’s said that the three things that can cheer up a glum woman are chocolate, shopping, and jewelry (not necessarily in that order). And when it comes to jewelry, what better than diamond jewelry to appease the woman you love, the woman you treasure. A lot has been said about diamond rings, especially diamond engagement rings. Here, in this article, why don’t we see the array of choices in diamond earrings, that are available for us these days. I’m sure, by the end of it, you’ll want to add a couple of them to your collection.
Let’s begin with the different colored diamonds that are used to make gorgeous diamond earrings. There are quite a few of these colored gemstones that are used. Read ahead and decide which one you want.
Black Magic: If you want something mysterious and chic, go in for black diamond earrings. They have that elegant and alluring look about them that can make anyone go weak in the knees (and I do mean ANYONE!). Simple black diamond stud earrings look fantastic when paired with a plain necklace with a matching pendant. A suggestion would be to wear this color for formal, evening occasions.
Cool Blue: If you’re one of those calm and collected personalities, then you should definitely be wearing jewelry that complements your poise and grace. Get yourselves a stunning pair of blue diamond earrings to do the trick. Nothing looks more refined and neat than a woman bearing glistening blue diamonds in her ears. So get a pair at once!
Divine Chocolate: No woman (well, almost no woman) can resist the temptation of chocolate. Neither of diamonds. So, the perfect gift for your sweetheart would be a pair of chocolate diamond earrings. These champagne-colored stones are sure to make her heart flutter. And the best part is, if you’re looking for inexpensive diamond earrings, then this is the ideal choice. They’re stylish, they’re inexpensive (at least compared to the others) and they look simply stunning. You really cannot ask for more.
Classic White: Yes, though the ones mentioned above are all beautiful, nothing can match the classic beauty of white diamond earrings. The finesse and dazzling beauty of a perfectly cut and polished diamond earring can only be appreciated by a proud owner of one of these beauties. So, if you’re not sure about any of the colored ones, don’t hesitate about going in for the heavenly white ones.
As far as shapes are concerned, I’ve decided to tell you about a couple of them here. So, let’s just get straight to it then.
Pretty Princess: Among diamond earrings, princess cut diamond earrings are probably the most popular ones. They are square-shaped diamonds that look tasteful and sophisticated, especially when set in a yellow gold or white gold base.
Dasher Asscher: Asscher cut diamond earrings are a mysteriously cut diamond shape. They appear to be square-shaped if you look at them from above, but they’re actually cuboid in shape. These diamonds have bejeweled quite a few well-known people from the ancient times of emperors to recent celebrities too.
Pair ‘o Pears: A favorite among many women, pear-shaped diamond earrings have that oomph factor. They’re also called tear-shaped earrings. Whatever you call them, they’ll always be among the top shapes that a woman would want her diamond to be.
There are a variety of sizes and shapes to pick from when it comes to flaunting your precious diamonds. Here’s a peek at the best shapes for small studs or long.
- Tear Drops
- Plain Round
- Dangling Chandeliers
- Simple Hoops
Diamonds mean much more to a woman than just a piece of jewelry. So, if you’re thinking of getting one for yourself (or for your better half), just make sure that the type of earrings you buy are worthy of the exquisite woman who’s going to be wearing them.

Diamonds are highly valued for the looks they offer. It is said that the inner surfaces of these stones refract light and this is the reason behind their sparkling nature. However, accumulation of dirt or other substances like oil, lotion, etc., may affect the sparkle of the stone. So, wearing diamond rings while doing household chores, exposes these precious stones to various materials. With time, the stone will get accumulated with dirt, which can affect its sheen. The stone will no more be sparkling and will look dull. In such cases, you have to clean the ring, so as to bring back that sheen. Regular cleaning will be useful in maintaining the brilliance of your diamond ring.
Tips for Cleaning a Diamond Ring
The most important point to keep in mind about diamonds is that they have to be handled carefully. These expensive stones must be kept away from dirt, harsh chemicals and contact with coarse substances. If you wear a diamond ring daily (as in case of engagement or wedding ring), then it needs to be cleaned regularly. As the diamond is exposed to various materials used in your day-to-day activities, there are chances that they lose sheen due to accumulated dirt.
Cleaning a diamond ring can be done on your own or by the jeweler. If the ring is too expensive or an antique piece, it is always better to approach the jeweler, who has modern techniques to clean these stones. If the ring has other precious stones, along with the diamond, then also, it will be better to approach the jeweler for cleaning the stones. Some of the jewelers provide their customers with a complete diamond cleaning set as well as cleaning instructions. In such cases, all you have to do is to follow the instructions. Simple diamond rings can be cleaned at home, if you know the right methods. You have to keep in mind not to use harsh chemicals, soap bars or coarse brushes for cleaning diamonds. Knowing the particular diamond ring style may also prove helpful.
- First of all, spread a towel on a flat surface in a location that provides you with plenty of light. This can be your cleaning space. If you are cleaning the ring inside a sink, make sure that the drain is closed properly or else grip the ring tightly.
- Take a bowl and pour a cup of lukewarm water into it. Mix ¼ cup of ammonia in the bowl and keep the ring in the solution for at least three to five minutes.
- If the ring is very dirty, then wait for at least 15 minutes, before you take it out of the solution. Once you take the ring out, rinse it with plain lukewarm water and use a soft toothbrush to clean the stone.
- Otherwise, use a solution of water mixed with a small amount of dish washing liquid for this purpose. You may use a kids toothbrush for cleaning diamonds at home.
- Dry the stone and the ring with a lint-free cloth, after you rinse the ring thoroughly with plain water. Use the cloth to polish the stone, so that it sparkles after cleaning.
- You may skip the step of cleaning diamonds with ammonia. All you have to do is to prepare a solution of one part mild dish washing liquid with plain water and use it for cleaning diamonds.
- In this case too, you have to soak the ring for at least 20 minutes, if it is too dirty. Otherwise, just swirling the ring in the solution and cleaning with a soft toothbrush will be enough. Rinse well before drying the stone.
- Some people use baking soda for cleaning diamond rings that are slightly dirty. A paste made of baking soda and water is used for this purpose. The paste is applied over the stone, which is then cleaned with a soft brush.
- The ring is then rinsed with plain water and dried with a soft lint-free cloth.
- You might have heard about cleaning diamond rings with vinegar. A mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and water is used for this purpose. The ring is soaked for 10 to 15 minutes, before brushing with a soft brush.
- Rinse in plain water and dry the stone immediately.
- If you are doubtful about these methods, you may resort to commercial cleaning solutions meant for diamonds.
- In that case, you need to follow the instructions on the package, so as to clean your diamond ring.
- Whatever may be the method you choose for cleaning a diamond ring, you have to make sure that you dry the ring as well as the stone, as soon as possible. A lint-free cloth is always preferred, as air drying may cause water spots on the stone.
- As mentioned above, jewelers too provide the service of cleaning diamonds (usually free of cost). They usually employ methods like steam cleaning, ultrasound cleaning, etc.
- Even sulfuric acid cleaning is one such method used by jewelers, for cleaning diamonds. This type of cleaning is required for rings that are very dirty. They may charge you for this cleaning method.
- It is always better to seek the opinion of the jeweler (from whom you buy the ring) with regard to diamond cleaning methods. If he is providing you with instructions or cleaning solutions, you have to use them only.
Otherwise, try the above said methods carefully. You can prevent diamond rings from getting dirty, by removing them before handling chemicals, cosmetics, oil, soil and other such materials. Even cleaning of diamonds should be done, only when it is necessary. Frequent cleaning may also cause the sparkle of these stones to fade away.
A ruby is the birthstone for July and symbolizes immortal love. The 40th anniversary is also known as ‘Ruby Anniversary’, since it signifies undying love. The beauty of this stone can dazzle and maintaining it is not really a hassle. Ruby is the second hardest stone after diamond, and as such almost nothing can tarnish or affect the ruby chemically. So cleaning and maintaining the resplendence of this stone is not a very difficult job. The richness of the blood red color of the ruby depends on the iron content in the stone. More the iron, the redder the ruby will be. These natural stones are extremely expensive, and so, you now have lab created rubies, which have the same chemical composition as the real ones, minus the flaws. They are less expensive than the natural ones.
Significance of the Ruby
The ruby being a symbol of love, is the perfect gift for the 15th and the 40th wedding anniversary. It is believed that the ruby can help bring love back in a downhill marriage, and deepens the love that is already there. This “pigeon blood red” stone is also associated with passion, and energy. Its vibrancy is believed to heighten passions, enthusiasm, and sexual activity. It is a pleochroic stone, which means that it exhibits two colors when viewed from different angles. The good things associated with this stunning stone are endless! It is believed that the ruby personifies beauty and grace, and hence, is the perfect gift for any woman. This stone is also supposed to elevate motivation levels in a person and boost positive dreams and thoughts, as well as positivity in attitude and help better visualization. The ruby is known as the king of gems and is associated with powerful feelings. This multifaceted stone also gives the wearer courage, and shields him from bad things. After going on and on for so long about the virtues and benefits of this beautiful stone, it would be really heart breaking to see that it is not being taken care of, right?
Caring for Your Ruby Jewelry
Go through the following tips to ensure that your ruby jewelry continues to keep glowing over the years.
While wearing rubies, remember that exposure to chemicals, although does not chemically affect the rubies, may tarnish it over time. Also, avoid wearing them when you are going to be doing rough work like gardening, washing, etc. I know that you will not wear your favorite ruby set when doing all this work, but what I meant was, in case your engagement ring has rubies in it, and if you wear it all the time, it is better to remove it while doing chores like the ones mentioned above. Or if you’re wearing it for any other reason like health or emotional well-being, then too. Many people wear ruby rings with another diamond ring. If this is the case, then make sure that your diamond is not brushing against your ruby continuously, since that will put scratches on your ruby.
Rubies are not affected by commercial solvents, so they can be used for cleaning the rubies effectively. A toothbrush dipped in warm water is also more than enough to clean ruby jewelry, which is set in an intricate design. The bristles of the brush will remove the dirt lodged in the tiny crevices of the setting. You can also use a toothpick to clean off any remaining dirt. Avoid using a toothpaste, since the granularity of the toothpaste may cause scratches on the ruby. Warm soapy water can also be used. When you take it off, never keep it directly in the box. Wipe it clean with a warm, wet, soft cloth, to remove any sweat, oil and dirt that has been transferred to it. A mild detergent should be used. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals, since they can cause damage to the settings and mountings of your ruby.
Storing rubies correctly will go a long way in making them last longer and better. If you store them in the wrong manner, then cuts, scratches and loosening of the stones are common problems you will have to deal with. To avoid these things, store your rubies properly in cloth bags before you put them in your jewelry box. Make sure that you are not piling your jewelry on top of each other. If you do not want to use cloth bags, or don’t have them, then spread a layer of cotton underneath the jewels. Place the rubies on this cotton layer, and spread another layer on top of it. Make sure that no two rubies are kept side by side without at least a layer of cotton between them, since they may grind against each other leading to scratches.
Tips for Caring for Rubies
- Clean the rubies in a bowl. In case there is a loose stone, there is no danger of it rolling or draining away in the sink.
- A professional cleaning and inspection once a year should be done to ensure that your ruby is in perfect order. If it has been oiled for giving it that extra shine, then it is important to avoid steam cleaning procedures or chemicals.
- Make sure that your rubies do not come in contact with perfumes, or other sprays, cleaners or harsh chemicals.
- Boil half a teaspoon of tea leaves in water and allow the mixture to cool down. Soak your rubies in this solution overnight, and wipe clean in the morning with a soft cloth to make your rubies resplendent once again.
Rubies, if flawless, are more precious than diamonds. They are very expensive, and if you think that you will not be able to afford a natural ruby, you can try the lab created ruby mentioned above. Rubies are extremely beautiful, and if taken care of properly, can be passed down through generations to become family heirlooms.
The demand for handmade jewelry is huge, and selling this creative stuff can be a highly profitable venture too. However, you must know the right ways to promote your creations to boost their sales. For this, you must be thoroughly aware about certain tips for marketing and selling your handcrafted jewelry. Even more so, if you do not have a storefront or designated space to sell your handmade creations. Today, the Internet has opened up several avenues for small entrepreneurs and individuals with creative abilities to sell their products to a larger consumer base.
But there are certain things that are common to selling products, be it handmade or mass produced, virtually or in brick and mortar stores. Always package your products attractively, and always, always maintain quality. Also, it is essential to know what your target market comprises so that you can tweak your marketing and sales strategies accordingly. Here are few valuable tips that will tell you about the ways to sell handmade jewelry online and offline.
Host a Jewelry Party
Today, many homemakers with creative talent and aspiring women entrepreneurs are generating decent income by selling handmade jewelry from the very comfy confines of their own homes. All they do is host a jewelry party at their home, and invite their neighbors, friends, and family members to browse through their attractive jewelry on display over snacks and drinks. Most of the time, the guests end up buying something or even place orders for similar pieces.
Tip: Host jewelry parties during the gift-giving season so that your guest will always have a reason to buy your stuff.
Partner With Web Stores
One of the easiest ways to reach out to your targeted customer is by hosting your stuff on popular online jewelry shopping sites like Etsy and eBay. For a small fees, your jewelry will have an online presence and exposure to buyers across the world. Another option is to partner with boutiques, crafts stores, gift shops, salons, etc., and ask them to display your jewelry against a certain percentage in the sales proceeds. Many may not agree to this, but keep trying till you find the right store to host your jewelry. For example, if you are selling real or semi-precious birthstone jewelry, you can approach a fortune-telling paraphernalia shop to display your jewelry.
Tip: While speaking to the owners of boutiques or gift shops, try to convince them by telling them about the profit they will make on the total sales figure. This will definitely impress them.
Participate in Trade Fairs, Exhibitions, and Fundraisers
Participate in large trade fairs and exhibitions by having an enclosure or stall for your jewelry. Do not forget to have an attractive display of your jewelry, and a mirror in place for people to try out your baubles. Collect customer contacts in a feedback register so that you can call them up later. You can also work with your community or the local school to raise funds for a particular cause. For example, if a school needs to build a new gymnasium, offer them to sell your jewelry at a fundraiser. This will serve two causes. Firstly, your jewelry will sell by adding a noble cause to your sales pitch. You can always hand over a percentage of the sales proceeds to the cause.
Tip: Try to gauge customer preference and inclination by participating in local church markets and weekend markets before you pay for expensive stall space in professional exhibitions.
Use a Website and Social Media
Host an interactive website which will allow people to see your designs and contact you. Your own website will serve as an excellent marketing platform. Ensure that your website is search engine optimized and allows online payment through different modes. Create a blog for your business, and keep updating information about your jewelry and its photos. You can act as a jewelry expert and give free tips for jewelry-making and maintenance. Use Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp to interact with existing and prospective clients to help promote and enhance your handmade jewelry.
TIP: Ensure your website has the right keywords. Instead of tagging “cabochon earrings”, be specific and mention “Silver sea green cabochon earrings”. This will help the customer to easily search for the right jewelry.
Employ Conventional Advertising
In spite of today’s technology-driven marketing techniques, you cannot ignore the reach and power of conventional advertising mediums. You can advertise in various magazines, newspapers to route the readers to your online store or website. Post flyers and banners at public places or jewelry stores, which will help you to generate sales.
Tip: There is no point in advertising in jewelry-making magazines as they will mostly be subscribed by jewelry designers and not customers. Try to tap into women’s magazines instead, as they will be read by many fashion-savvy women.
Your invoices can be a great way to market your products. For example, instead of handing out a paper invoice, send an online invoice that contains a preview of your new product range. This may interest the customer, and compel him/her to visit again. Further more, this will save paper and printing cost.
Tip: Ensure that you offer a discount to your regular customers on the sale of new products.
Adorn Your Jewelry
Needless to say, you will have to wear your new pieces of jewelry everyday so that people can see them and order similar pieces. Who knows, they may also recommend your work to others. Also, wearing your own designs for a day or two will help you judge their quality and get a user-like perspective on your creations.
Tip: Do not forget to offer a warranty for the material of the jewelry at least for 12 months after the purchase. This will portray you as a reliable jewelry seller.
Offer Discounts and Schemes
Depending on the occasion, offer discounts on jewelry. For example, a month before Valentine’s Day, offer 25% off on all heart-shaped jewelry. Offer a pair of earrings free on the purchase of every two products. Such schemes often act as customer pullers, and you may witness increased sales. However, don’t forget to advertise these schemes through all your communication mediums like word of mouth, social network, website, web-store, blog, etc.
Tip: Once you ensure that you are making a profit even after offering a free gift or discount, and only then announce such schemes.
After gaining popularity, you may also offer signature pieces of jewelry. Many people are ready to shell out a few extra bucks if they get unique customized jewelry. Also, many jewelry websites these days offer bidding for a piece of jewelry everyday. This way they end up earning far more than the quoted price. Hope, you will put these tips for marketing and selling your handcrafted jewelry into practice, and register excellent profit.
With time, silver and sterling silver jewelry tends to get tarnished and the build-up of tarnish makes it appear black. Tarnishing occurs due to climatic conditions and also due to the silver coming in contact with certain chemicals. The materials that cause silver tarnishing include eggs, rubber bands, wood, onions, etc., and hence, the fact remains that avoiding its tarnishing is nearly impossible and the only way to get rid of it is to clean it as soon as the tarnish starts to build up.
There are several methods that can be adopted to clean silver jewelry. However, while selecting the method you must take into consideration the degree to which the jewelry has been tarnished. You can make use of either commercially available silver cleaning products or you can prepare a cleaning solution at home and use it to remove the tarnish.
There are a lot of commercial products available which include silver jewelry wipes, soap, polish, silver jewelry dip, ultra-sonic cleaner, etc. If the jewelry has been tarnished to a large extent and appears very close to the color black, then it is best to use the ultra-sonic silver jewelry cleaner along with the sonic cleaning liquids to remove the tarnish. Other products can be used for regular cleaning or for a mild to medium tarnish.
- 1/4 cup salt
- 1/4 cup liquid dish soap
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- Aluminum foil
- A large pot
Line the inside of a large pot with the aluminum foil on all sides as well as the bottom. Mix the salt, liquid dish soap and baking soda in half gallon of water and pour it into the pot. Then, place the silver jewelry in the solution and place the pot on low heat for a few minutes. Turn off the burner and let the jewelry sit in the solution for a few more minutes. Strain out the solution from the pot using a strainer and rinse the jewelry under cold running water. Make sure you wash off the solution well, especially the salt. Next, place the jewelry on a clean, soft towel to dry. Dispose off the aluminum foil carefully.
Usage of Toothpaste
Usage of white toothpaste can also give excellent results. To begin with, you will need to dampen the jewelry to be cleaned. Then, take a generous amount of white toothpaste and apply it to an old soft toothbrush. Gently brush the toothpaste on the silver for a minute or two, rinse it, and dry with a clean and soft towel.
You should be very careful with the stones in the jewelry while cleaning it. Make sure you store your silver jewelry in jewelry boxes rather than storing them in paper, cotton, or unlined wooden boxes. Most importantly, remember to clean the tarnish on a regular basis.
If you are like me who loves to wear silver jewelry, then you too must be in a fix as to know how to clean sterling silver jewelry and preserve them. Silver is a delicate metal and it requires a lot of care, if you want to preserve its sparkle and luster. Pure silver is too soft and malleable and so is combined with some other metals to form jewelry. When silver is mixed with copper in the ratio of 92.5% silver to 7.5% copper, it is called sterling silver. There are many sterling silver jewelry cleaner available in the market as well as several ways by which you can clean them at home.
Tips to Clean Sterling Silver at Home
Silver tarnishes very easily and it tends to look darker with the passage of time. This is due to oxidation of silver with sulfides in the atmosphere. There are various ways of cleaning sterling silver jewelry.
- Use a gentle and mild liquid detergent to clean sterling silver jewelry. Avoid contact of silver jewelry with any kind of abrasives such as acetone, chlorine and bleach.
- The best way to clean sterling silver jewelry is by using a piece of soft cotton or flannel cloth. Rub the silver with back and forth motion to clean it. Do not rub it in circular motions, as doing this might leave scratch marks over the jewelry.
- Another way in which you can clean sterling silver jewelry, is by using toothpaste. For this you need a soft cloth and a white toothpaste. Apply toothpaste on your jewelry and rub it with a cloth for 2-3 minutes. Rinse the jewelry with lukewarm water and dry it with a towel.
- You can also use a solution of mild herbal shampoo to clean your silver jewelry. In a glass bowl, dilute some shampoo and immerse the silver jewelry in it for 10-12 minutes. Rinse with warm water and dry them thoroughly.
- If you are wondering how to clean silver jewelry, then here is a good method. Line a shallow glass dish with aluminum foil with its shiny side pointing towards you. Place the silver jewelry over the aluminum foil and sprinkle 5-6 tablespoon of washing soda. Pour half a liter of boiling water over it and let the jewelry soak for 10-15 minutes. Rinse well with water and dry it with a soft flannel cloth. If your jewelry contains any stones like turquoise or pearls, then do not use this procedure, as you might damage the stones.
- Store your silver jewelry in air tight containers or plastic pouches. While storing them, make sure that different pieces of jewelry do not rub against each other, as scratches may be formed on them.
If your sterling silver jewelry has excess tarnish and dirt on it, then it is a good idea to clean your silver jewelry with commercial silver polish. It is available in a paste and liquid form, and works well for delicate pieces of jewelry. Apply small quantities of polish on a soft flannel cloth. Now gently rub the polish, in an up and down motion, making sure that you do not miss cleaning the small grooves in it. You can also use a toothbrush with soft bristles to clean the silver jewelry. Rinse thoroughly under running water to get rid of all the dirt.
One of the best and most economical sterling silver jewelry cleaner that you can use is by mixing ½ teaspoon of ammonia and 2 tablespoons of any mild detergent with 2 cups of water. Soak your jewelry in it for 10-15 minutes and rinse them in running water. You will find that your silver shines as good as new. If you wear your silver jewelry everyday, then make sure that you wear them after you have applied all creams, lotions and perfumes. Always ensure that you use very mild detergent for cleaning your sterling silver jewelry as harsh chemicals can dull their shine and damage them.
An incredible 165,000 tonnes of gold has been mined till date, since the dawn of human civilization. Not surprisingly, a large fraction of it has been used up in the creation of jewelry items over the centuries. Every year about half of the gold mined over the world goes into creation of jewelry of all kinds, ranging from rings, earrings, necklaces to bangles and other exotic pieces of craftsmanship.
A consumer out there in the market, shopping for a gold ring or necklace for his wife, needs to know whether what he is paying for has pure gold in it or is it just another gold plated piece of junk. To verify the purity level of gold jewelry, a marking system is devised, which indicates the amount of pure gold that is contained within a jewelry item and authenticates its quality. In this Buzzle article, I provide you with an explanation of how to identify gold jewelry markings and verify the purity level of a piece of gold jewelry.
Measurement of Gold Purity
Gold being inherently soft, it cannot be directly molded into jewelry, without mixing it with other metals for strength. That’s why a quality grading system, which can measure the amount of pure gold contained within a gold jewelry item is necessary. There are two existing systems used for this purpose. Gold purity is measured in terms of karat value in the US. Karat value is a specification of the fraction of total weight of a gold item, that is pure gold. The gold of highest purity grading is 24 Kt, which means that it’s 99.99% pure gold.
The scale moves downwards, with 23 Kt, 22 Kt, 21 Kt up till 8 Kt grading. A 12 Kt piece of gold has 12 parts out of 24 by weight, to be pure gold. In Europe, an alternative system is used to measure gold purity, which uses ‘Millesimal Fineness’ as the measurement parameter. It measures purity of a gold jewelry in terms of parts of pure gold per thousand parts. Let us see how to read gold markings and verify its purity in the following lines.
How to Identify Jewelry Markings?
You will need to arm yourself with a magnifying glass to be able to read gold markings as they tend to be engraved very finely. Also get a portable precision balance, which can measure weights from fractions of a gram to multiples of a gram. Here is how you can check for the purity of the product.
Check the Karat Quality Rating
Most modern gold jewelry products have a ‘Karat’ grading inscribed on them. The printed karat value may be anywhere between 8 Kt to 24 Kt. To know the percentage of pure gold by weight, from karat grading, divide the karat grading by 24 and multiply it by hundred. You might want to check out this article explaining how to calculate the value of scrap gold, from karat grading.
Check For Millesimal Fineness Grading
If it’s a piece of European jewelry, the purity grading will be a three digit number less than 1000, with 999 being the millesimal fineness grading which is equivalent to 24 karat gold. The value may be anywhere between a minimum of 333 and a maximum of 999. Divide the value by 10 to get the percentage fraction by weight that’s pure gold.
Look For Brand Name Stamp or Symbol
Accompanying the karat or millesimal grading, there should be a symbol denoting the manufacturer’s brand. From the symbol, you can decipher the jewelry brand it belongs to. Avoid buying jewelry without brand markings.
By identifying the brand name, karat value and the millesimal fineness grading, one can determine the authenticity of gold jewelry quite easily. While buying scrap gold items, you need to be extreme careful in verifying the gold grading quality as chances are that traders will try to fool you. It is best not to go ahead with the purchase of a gold jewelry item, that has absolutely no markings on it. If it’s an old piece of jewelry from antiquity, get a referral evaluation from a jeweler, who would have the necessary apparatus for testing the quality.
Every woman loves to adorn herself with jewelry. With time and constant usage, the jewelry may lose its shine and become dull, especially when it comes in contact with skin and air. In order to preserve the jewelry in its natural condition, most women, and that includes me, keep our jewelry in cloth pouches. But this, it seems is not enough, as jewelry, especially white gold, tends to become lusterless just after a few times of being used. This article teaches you how to clean white gold ornaments and help keep its shine, beauty, and newness, in check.
Take a bowl and put one tablespoon each, of plain water and ammonia, in it. Stir the solution with a spoon so that it gets blended properly.
Now take the piece of white gold that needs to be cleaned and put it in this solution. Keep it soaked in the solution for about half an hour.
After half an hour, take out the jewelry from the solution and wash it with lukewarm water.
Now take a cloth and rub the jewelry piece with it gently. You may need to rub it a number of times, till it regains its original color and shine.
Cleaning White Gold Ring
Take a bowl and put one tablespoon of lukewarm water in it. Now add one teaspoon of dish soap and two teaspoons of ethyl alcohol to it, and mix properly with a spoon. Keep on stirring till the soap gets dissolved completely.
Put the ring in this soapy solution and leave it there for about ten minutes. This will loosen the debris which gets accumulated in the ring.
After ten minutes, take the ring out of the soap water and place it on a piece of cloth. Now take a toothbrush and with it, remove all the dirt and debris from the ring.
Once you are done, keep the ring back on the cloth. The ring needs to be washed under the tap to get rid of the debris which results due to brushing it with the brush. Before doing that, put a stopper in the drain so that the ring does not get washed away into the pipe along with the water.
After blocking the drain, let the water flow freely from the tap onto the ring for about one minute. Afterwards, take a dry cloth and wipe the ring dry.
Although using the above-mentioned methods will clean your jewelry to a great extent, it is recommended that you take the jewelry piece to a jeweler for getting best results. Jewelers have an ultrasonic machine, which helps in cleaning the dirt and debris lodged even in the smallest of cracks of the jewelry. Normally, putting the white gold jewelry in two cycles of the ultrasonic machines is more than enough to clean it and make it sparkle and shine.
The methods mentioned above should be carried out at least once a month to keep the original shine and luster of your jewelry in place. However, if all these methods fail to give you the results that you desire, the reason could be that its rhodium plating has worn off. If this is the case, getting the jewelry re-plated by a jeweler is the only solution to restore it to its original appearance.
